What are the special precautions for using butane gas cylinders?
2025-12-08 10:35:17

Butane, as an efficient and clean energy source, is widely used in scenarios such as catering, outdoor camping, and industrial cutting. However, its storage carrier, Butane gas cylinders, pose potential safety risks such as explosion and fire. Butane is volatile, has a low flash point (-60℃), and is prone to form explosive gases when mixed with air. These characteristics determine that its usage must strictly adhere to special safety guidelines. From the storage environment to the operation norms, from equipment inspection to emergency response, any oversight in every link may lead to safety accidents. Therefore, it is crucial to clearly understand the usage precautions.

Strict control of the storage environment is the primary prerequisite for the safe use of butane gas cylinders. Unlike ordinary gas cylinders, butane gas cylinders must not be stored in high-temperature environments. They should be kept away from open flames, heat sources and areas exposed to direct sunlight. The storage temperature should be controlled below 40℃. This is because high temperatures can cause a sudden increase in pressure inside the cylinder, exceeding the cylinder's pressure resistance limit and leading to an explosion. At the same time, the storage area must be well-ventilated to prevent the accumulation of butane gas leakage and the formation of explosive mixtures. It must not be stored together with oxidants, strong acids, strong alkalis and other dangerous chemicals to prevent chemical reactions. When stored at home or in a small place, it should also be kept out of reach of children. The gas cylinders should be fixed upright with a special fixing frame to prevent valve damage and leakage caused by toppling.

Standardized operation procedures are the core link in avoiding risks. Pre-use inspection is indispensable. Carefully check whether there are cracks or corrosion on the gas cylinder body, whether the valve is intact, whether the connecting hose is aged or damaged, and whether the interface is loose. When connecting devices, special tools should be used to tighten the interfaces, and soapy water should be applied to the connection points to check the airtightness. Only after confirming that no bubbles are produced can it be used. During use, the gas cylinder must be kept upright. It is strictly prohibited to use it horizontally or upside down, as direct ejection of butane liquid may cause dangers such as freezing and backfire of the hose. At the same time, it is necessary to avoid continuous use for a long time, which may cause the temperature of the gas cylinder to be too low. If frost is found on the cylinder body, stop using it immediately and wait for it to return to normal temperature.

Security protection in special scenarios needs to be strengthened even more. When used in the kitchen of the catering industry, it should be kept at least 1.5 meters away from the stove and no flammable materials should be piled up around it. When used outdoors, avoid strong winds and thunderstorms to prevent the flame from being blown out, which may cause gas leakage or damage to the gas cylinder due to lightning strikes. In addition, butane gas cylinders must not be modified, refurbished or have residual liquid dumped privately. The disposal of residual liquid should be carried out by professional institutions. Dumping privately may cause combustion and explosion. After use, the valve of the gas cylinder must be closed, the connection disconnected, and the gas cylinder moved to a safe area for storage.
