How long can the efficacy of insecticidal aerosol last?

In the context of home pest control, many users are concerned about how long the efficacy of Insecticide aerosols can last after using them. In fact, there is no fixed standard for the duration of the efficacy of insecticide aerosols. It varies greatly due to multiple factors such as product type, usage environment, and pest species. Generally, it can be understood from two dimensions: "immediate killing" and "residual protection", and the actual action cycle needs to be judged in combination with specific circumstances.


From the perspective of product types and ingredients, the duration of efficacy of aerosols with different formulas varies significantly. Currently, the Insecticide aerosols available on the market are mainly divided into two types: "contact type" and "retention type". Contact type products focus on quickly knocking down pests, with their active ingredients mostly being pyrethroids. They can kill pests that come into contact with the liquid within a few minutes to half an hour after spraying. However, they have a small residue, evaporate quickly, and their efficacy usually lasts only 1-2 days, making them suitable for short-term concentrated pest control. The retention type products add components with slow-release properties (such as permethrin and propyl). After spraying, they can form a protective film on the surface of objects. When pests come into contact with them, they will gradually be poisoned and die. The effect lasts longer, reaching 1-2 weeks under stable environmental conditions. Some high-quality products can even last for about one month, making them suitable for long-term prevention of pest breeding.

Environmental conditions are the key external factors affecting the maintenance of efficacy. Firstly, there is the issue of ventilation. If Windows are kept open for a long time or air conditioners and fans are turned on after spraying, it will accelerate the evaporation of the liquid medicine, resulting in a significant reduction in the residual protection time, which may be shortened from the original one week to 3 to 5 days. Conversely, when used in Spaces with better airtightness (such as wardrobes or drawers), the evaporation of the liquid medicine is slow, and the duration of its efficacy can be extended accordingly. Secondly, there is the frequency of cleaning. If the sprayed area is frequently wiped (such as kitchen countertops and floors), it will damage the residual film on the surface, causing the efficacy to expire prematurely. In hard-to-clean areas such as corners and crevices of cabinets, the residue of the liquid medicine is more stable and the protective time is longer. In addition, temperature and humidity also have an impact. A high-temperature and high-humidity environment may accelerate the decomposition of the liquid medicine, resulting in a 20% to 30% reduction in the duration of its efficacy compared to a normal and dry environment.

The types and density of pests can also indirectly affect the actual experience of efficacy. For flying pests such as flies and mosquitoes, the immediate effect of contact type aerosols is more obvious. However, because these pests have a wide range of activities and are prone to fly in from outside, even if the aerosol residue remains, new pests may still enter, leading people to mistakenly believe that the efficacy has disappeared. As for crawling pests such as cockroaches and ants, their activity range is relatively fixed. If they come into contact with the film formed by the residual aerosol, the duration of the efficacy will be more in line with the product's marked period. Meanwhile, if the density of pests is too high, a single spray may not be able to completely eliminate them. During the continuous action of the residual liquid, it will gradually be consumed by the pests due to repeated contact, resulting in a shortened duration of the efficacy.

To give full play to the role of Insecticide aerosols more reasonably, it is recommended to select the product type according to the demand: contact type for short-term pest control, and retention type for long-term protection. When in use, try to keep it in a closed environment for 1-2 hours (ensure that personnel and pets are evacuated), then ventilate moderately and avoid over-cleaning the spraying area. If pests are found to be active again, supplementary spraying can be carried out every 7 to 10 days (as per the product instructions). At the same time, environmental cleaning (such as removing food residues and sealing crevices) should be combined to reduce the breeding of pests, forming a dual guarantee of "chemical protection + environmental governance", which can more effectively control pest problems.
